Since riding at Mohegan, I’ve been learning the technical skills required both in saddle and on the ground. Whether it’s working on my leadership skills in the round yard, or working on my side passes with schoolmaster mare Sunny, I’ve found Karen’s ability to personalise lessons really valuable. She has been able to pass on her knowledge in a simple and easy-to-understand way so that I can take this home and use it in other environments.
I initially met Karen at a clinic she held at a nearby agistment centre, and recently asked her to host something similar at Riding for the Disabled Brigadoon where I regularly volunteer. The Mohegan team attended the RDA Open Day where they held a workshop for students living with disabilities and volunteers with a wide range of experiences from beginners to competitors. It was so great to see the connection and engagement from all of the participants, with every single person taking away some knowledge and confidence from Karen.
For me, something that I’ve really enjoyed is taking in the beautiful sights around the Swan Valley with Mohegan’s Training on the Trail lessons. These lessons are a great opportunity to put everything into practice that I’ve been taught in the arena, to learn how to introduce horses to new environments, and to meet like-minded people to enjoy the day with.
There is never a dull moment at Mohegan and I would highly recommend to anyone interested in horse riding and leadership whether they are a beginners or advanced, a horse owner or not, or a group wanting to hold a clinic. Karen has created a positive and supportive environment, and there are a great group of riders to have a laugh and a cuppa with after each lesson.
